Although many ski centres claim to be year round destination resorts, few if any can match the range of facilities offered by the understated Seefeld Olympia Region with its world-beating five 5-star hotels. The villages of the region - Leutasch, Mösern/Buchen, Reith, Scharnitz and Seefeld - are located between 960 m - 1200 m above sea level on a sunny plateau, open to the south, and the 'higher than average elevation for an Austrian resort' means that good snow-cover is the norm. and the large ski area has 90% snow-making to make up if mother nature fails to produce the white goods. The largest and by far the best known of the villages, Seefeld, has a wonderful ambience with its old centre and picturesque mountain scenery. Horse drawn carriages depart from the pedestrianised heart of the village by the Gothic-style pilgrimage church of St. Oswald. The region is located just south of the German border, next to the Karwendel nature reserve and only 25 km (15 miles) northwest of Innsbruck which also adds to its popularity with ski holiday connoisseurs. Many visit with their own transport so that they can make the most of the 'Happy Ski Card' which includes major neighbouring German resorts such as Ehrwald, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald. Apart from downhill skiing the region has a strong reputation for Nordic sports, and was the venue for the cross-country skiing in the 1964 and '76 Innsbruck Winter Olympics. The 1985 World Championships and numerous world cup events have also been staged in the area. The Seefeld Olympia Region is a marvellous hiking area at all times of the year.
